The lawyer of Law Firm Juridicon, dr. Katažyna Mikša, participated in the public hearing of the Committee on Petition of the European Parliament on “Fighting against discrimination of EU citizens in the EU Member States and the protection of minorities”. She was invited as an expert of International Law to give a presentation on “Unofficial or indirect discrimination in education and some general aspects relating to the protection of minorities”. In her speech, Katažyna Mikša focused on the rights of national minorities in Lithuania, particular attention she paid on uniform maturity exam of the Lithuanian language.
In the event participated speakers originated from academic institutions, ECRML Committee of Experts in the Council of Europe, the EP legal service and the relevant DG in the EU Commission.
The hearing was split in two parts: the first one was devoted to some general aspects relating to the protection of minorities, concept of equality and non-discrimination with respect to EU law and jurisprudence. The second part was focused on some particular issues as LGB family rights’ recognition, discrimination based on minority language. In this part, petitioners presented their claims.
